Week 4

Hi everyone, welcome to Wild Wild Week. This week was the wildest week of this year so far. Everyone is hoping for things to get better, but given the current situation, it looks like things are going to get worse. This week Russia captured parts of Ukraine, causing massive tensions all over the world. But, contrary to these, some “keyboard warriors” from all over the world, including India, shared a lot of memes for “lightening the mood” and for the “sake of humour”. Firstly, wars are not easy. A lot of lives, young and old, are lost in the wars. And those who stay alive have to undergo the mental stress throughout their life. Secondly, it’s very easy to make fun of something unless you are a part of it. You can make fun of the plight of the people and the soldiers there, but have you ever imagined yourself in their place? We are a generation who can’t imagine our lives without the internet even for a few hours, and the people in the conflict zone have to stay without electricit...

Week 3

Hi everyone. Welcome to Wild Wild Week. I was out of station last week and hence had taken a break from the blog. I am really sorry for that. One of the most debated things this week was a topic middle-schoolers have for essay writing and debate competitions: Are school uniforms necessary? There are many protests throughout the country, with people protesting not only for the allowance of hijabs, which were allowed until recently, but also for other religious symbols in educational institutions. Well, to be honest, this is an open-ended question.   But here’s what I think: Like reservations, religion should be kept out of educational institutes. Religious symbols, notably turbans and hijabs have very much been a part of the Indian educational institutions since time immemorial. Not only in educational institutions, but religious clothes and symbols are a part of many other places, including the Parliament. Article 25 of the constitution allows us to preach any re...

Week 2

Hello everyone! Welcome to Wild Wild Week. Happy belated Republic Day. Every year, as Republic Day starts coming closer, the same sets of topics come up for debate every time. It starts from the inclusion of the word secular in the constitution to caste reservation and eventually, it boils down to the “mistakes of Nehru” and Netaji vs Gandhiji. We will deal with these later on in this piece; let’s deal with some other issues which took place this week. One of the most important news of this week was the students protests against the Railway Recruitment Board’s Non-Technical Popular categories exam’s pattern. The students said that they felt “cheated” as the exam, which was initially decided to be held in a single phase, was being held in two phases and also that the exam was designed to favour those with a higher qualification, even for jobs that required lesser qualification. Around 1.25 crore candidates had applied for the exams for appointment to over 35,000 posts, from...

Week 1

Hi everyone, What a wild wild week it was! Or should I call it a week full of blunders? Not because someone committed a big blunder in the Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee. The blunders happened outside the chessboard, here in India. Two of the major blunders were committed by our respected Prime Minister Narendra Modi and one was unknowingly done by UP CM Yogi Adityanath and MP Ravi Kishan. A video of PM Modi virtually addressing the World Economic Forum went viral in the beginning of the week, which left the social media divided like always. Many people thought that Modi was using teleprompter and his stutter was due to the malfunctioning of the teleprompter, while many others said that he was interrupted by someone who told him to ask Klaus Schwab if his voice was audible clearly. First of all, why is this even a trending issue? Even if it is a teleprompter malfunction, what is so unique or funny about it? It’s common, right? And this is not a rare case in th...

Week 0: Introduction to Wild Wild Week

Hi everyone! Welcome to Wild Wild Week. Here, I shall talk about the most important events of the week, share my experiences and my learnings from them, and will discuss many more stuffs. Well, more on that later. Firstly, Wild Wild Week sounds so weird right? Why 2 wilds? What is so ‘Wild’ about the week? The title was adapted from the 1999 movie Wild Wild West , which, according to critics is one of the worst adaptations of a 60s hit TV series called The Wild Wild West. So, what does the term Wild West actually mean? Many of you must be familiar with the Western movie genre. Upon hearing the word ‘Western’, movie buffs would be visualising a moorland with a few houses, a cowboy on a horse, few gunslingers, red Indians, the police, gangsters, and so on. So basically, this genre of movies is based on the Wild West period in American history, that is, the period from 1865 to 1895. Why was it called wild west? Simply because of the lawlessness and the uncertainty that anythin...
